There are several widely used free email servers of which the best known are:

The most common mailserver of this type is "Sendmail" most unix systems either have it installed or can add it as a package. Sendmail will run in a Cygwin shell if you want to run it on a windows box or you can download a cross platform version. Hope this helps you find a good starting point. | |||||||

There's also qmail but I like postfix more. Also, you can try eBox Platform which integrates postfix. (disclosure: I work for eBox) | |||

If you are a beginner, postfix is the easiest to configure, and its quite fast and secure. I heard Exim is good, but i havn't used it. | |||
