My current NAS drive is a Western Digital My Book World Edition. However it has pretty serious problems .

So I'm in the market for a new drive to replace it and I'm looking for a drive with at least 500GB for around €150. (Shouldn't be hard, as that's what I paid for this drive last year).

Things to keep in mind:

  • I'm not buying WD again. Between the Mionet crapware they bundled with the drive, and the issues I've had with it, they haven't given a very good picture of themselves.
  • Ireland is quite expensive. If your in the US, add on 25% to the price you pay to get the price it will cost me once delivery costs and/or markup by shops is taken into account.
  • I've heard that you can use the drive as a minimal Linux server. I've never tried it, as the process requires blanking the drive, and I had nowhere to move the data. But something like this would be cool (but not nessecary) for a new drive.
  • For easy reference, atm €150 = £128 and $210 USD. (Links lead to currency conversion by google)

Try out one of these Lacie drives. They make them in 500 GB, 1 TB and 1.5 TB. This is right in line with your price range (Adjusting for exchange rate of course). Also a decent NAS device for a small network.

Synology has a lot of NAS products, with the cheapest ones (106j, 109j) currently being around 140EUR (without hard disk).

Synology has, what I consider, very active firmware development, with quit a lot of new features added from time to time.

I have an old 101j which was compatible with firmware upgrades for about 3-4 years or so after I bought it (since last year no longer compatible with the new firmware upgrades). Still, I am very satisfied with it.

Too slow. My current drive is too slow, and that review actually compares it to the new My Books (which are faster) and calls it slower. – Macha Jul 29 '09 at 20:03
