I have used NetNewsWire on both Mac and iPhone for years, and have been reasonably happy. Unfortunately the latest version of NNW for Mac, which I just upgraded to, now matches Google Reader's policy of marking items read after 30 days. The older version I had been using did not do this. I regularly keep unread items for way longer than 30 days, and do eventually read them, so this is a major bummer for me. The iPhone version has behaved this way forever, but I was ok with that as long as I had the full list on my desktop.

Keeping in sync between the iPhone and Mac is very important, so I need to find another online solution with clients available on both sides.

I've done a little digging but haven't found much; it seems like Google has pretty much taken over this space.

Any suggestions?

I gave you +1 because I was wondering why my Google Reader unread items was growing smaller every day. – Randolph West Jun 16 '10 at 16:31
possible duplicate of OS X RSS reader that syncs with Google Reader – Sathya Jun 16 '10 at 19:20
How could it be a duplicate? That person is looking for a reader that does sync with Google Reader, I'm looking for one that specifically does not. – Janine Sisk Jun 16 '10 at 19:41

CNET Newsreaders & RSS Readers

1st result for Google: rss reader reviews.

Well, I didn't check every one of them but all the ones I did are Windows-only... which would be expected from CNET. I did read some review sites but it seemed like everyone is either already using Google Reader or is moving in that direction. – Janine Sisk Jun 16 '10 at 19:44

Fever might be an option for you. At the moment it's all web based (being an application running on your own server), but an API was released recently and I know there are some apps on the way including this one for the iPad.

Also worth mentioning that Fever does some cool stuff apart from the normal RSS reader functionality, mostly about tracking the popularity of stories amongst your subscriptions and bringing those "hot" topics to the fore.

from Lifehacker: http://lifehacker.com/390619/best-rss-newsreaders - it lists some of the readers already listed...Sage for Mozilla Firefox is listed, and have used that also...works very well.

I would probably go with Netvibes, as @GmonC is recommending...then you can access it via the web from anywhere, and on the iPhone...

I've not personally used any of these (I use Google Reader) but here are a few I've found:

Good luck.

I decided to try some of these out, looks like Shrook has a $19.95 yearly subscription. – drye Jun 24 '10 at 2:04

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone; I finally had time to get back to this and check some of them out. Shrook looks like just what I was looking for, and I don't mind paying $20/year for a good service.
