Remote access is easy using VNC or similar.

There are two tricky parts:
1, You need to know you ip address, in theory this changes regulalry by your ISP, in practice it almost always stays the same for months. Use http://www.whatismyip.com/ to check - you need to rememebr this number.

2, If you are behind arouter/firewall/NAT you need to make sure the port forVNC is forwarded to the correct machine.

It all depends on what OS you are running. MSTSC ( Microsoft Terminal Services Client ) will either connect to Terminal Services on Windows server products [ which are included and merely need to be enabled via Add Windows Roles/Features ], or you need to have a Professional or higher version of Vista or Windows 7. If however, you are running a Mac, you are mostly out of luck, unless you are willing to spend money.

i would suggest instead using a service like logmein. its free, and sounds like it would be easier. plus it works on mac (the remote client is online)

Just a suggestion: If your looking for a paid service try GoToMyPC

Advice: What you actually want in a solution will all depend on how much configuration you want to do, your level of paranoia (security), and how savvy you are with remote technologies.

mstsc is but one part of the equation.
