I'm looking for Free and Open Source Computer Algebra Systems (FOSS CAS) for the day-to-day use of a computer science student (--> it doesn't need to be as fast and precise as mathematica).

It would be really nice if I could look under the hood for deeper understanding (like f.e. in R).

What tools can you suggest and why?

look into this online CAS:

http://www.vroomlab.com/nhome

click on calculator image to access it without login.

it uses Maxima as its default engine but can plug in mathematica and maple as well
