I recently purchased a Samsung 40" LED 120 Hz 1080p HDTV. I currently have a machine hooked up to it, but the maximum refresh rate at 1920x1080 is 60 Hz. FYI, the specs are:

  • AMD Phenom X4 9550 @ 2.2 GHz
  • 3x 1 GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 SDRAM & 1x 2 GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800
  • Seagate Barracuda 750 GB SATA 7200 RPM HDD
  • HIS HD 4350 256 MB DDR2 PCI-E x16

I also want to mention that I just got a BD-ROM combo drive for this machine as well. Now, the TV seems to be able to interpolate frames on its own to make a Bluray movie appear 120 Hz. However, it's not consistent and it goes back to 60 Hz for short periods of time.

So, the point of the question is: what video card(s) are able to run at a 1080p resolution with a 120 Hz refresh rate?

From quick searches on Google, I see that a video card supporting "1080p24" will be capable of doing this. However, if someone could give a better explanation of it, that'd be appreciated!

Are you sure the TV can even accept 120hz input? The TV uses the 120hz to convert 24/60hz to 120hz without having to do crazy pulldown business resulting in a smoother picture. In the case of your PC outputing 60hz the TV will likely double the frames (2*60 = 120) and maybe add in some interpolation magic depending on settings.

1080p24 = 24fps. The TV displays each frame 5 times (5*24=120) w/ interpolation magic.

Ultimately you're not going to get a card that outputs 120hz but a card that correctly/consistently does 24/60hz so that TV can do it's job.

The TV is 1080p24 as well. However, I'm not sure if a video card needs to be 1080p24 capable as well in order for interpolation to work correctly. – Wesley Jun 28 '10 at 17:33

nvidia's latest graphic cards should do the job because they support 3D vision (need a glasses of nvidia) and for this 3D graphic their min recommend is to have a monitor with 120 Hz refresh rate and nvidia's special glasses ... so nvidia do support 120 Hz ..... here is the link that support 3D vision and so that supports 120 Hz refresh rate ;)

As stated, 120Hz support is a requirement for Nvidia's 3D Vision tech, the chart at the bottom of this page lists Nvidia cards and which types of 3D output they support nvidia.com/object/3d-vision-requirements.html - pretty sure Blu-ray 3D also requires 120Hz and is listed as being supported by many of these cards. – GAThrawn Jun 27 '10 at 16:33
