How do I convert any video file to x264 (for HTML5) on Ubuntu?

How can I convert any video file to x264 for HTML 5? I'm using Ubuntu.

Not sure this should be on SO perhaps Server Fault would be better but I use ffmpeg. You need to make sure you install the x264 stuff.
