I have a WD My Passport and when I plug it into my Acer Aspire One (running Linux Ubuntu Netbook only, Windows not installed), it fails to autorun and I cannot access my pictures. Is there a way to avoid using the SmartWare program on the XHD so I can just navigate through the pictures? If I do have install the SmartWare program, how do I do that?

what do you mean by "cannot access my pictures"? are you sure the drive is mounted? have you tried browsing via the file manager (likely Nautilus)? is there a desktop icon for the drive? – quack quixote Jun 23 '10 at 21:31
I am very unfamiliar with Linux, so some of the terminology may get past me. My apologies. Usually, when you plug in an XHD to a Windows OS computer, it autoruns and the folder pops up with the jpegs as instantly "open-able" files. When I plug it in on this Acer running Ubuntu, it recognizes the HD [mounts?] and I can see files like .exe files and user manuals, but I cannot find any of my hundreds of jpegs. – Chris M. @chris: it's probably not setup with any linux "autorun" programs. the jpegs are probably buried in a folder somewhere; you'll have to configure your own autorun, or start searching, or something. (i don't use linux photo software so i don't know what to recommend.) note you should be able to browse by double-clicking on the desktop icon. – quack quixote Jun 23 '10 at 21:39
Ok, I'll keep digging. Thanks. – Chris M. Jun 23 '10 at 21:40
@chris: you might check the device with Disk Utility (under System > Administration) to see if there's some partition that isn't getting mounted. the drive that has .exe files and user manuals, if it's very small and doesn't contain any folders, may be a system drive for the device. – quack quixote Jun 23 '10 at 21:41
