Does VLC or some other free media player have the ability to play Blu-Ray discs?

I want to buy a Blu-Ray drive, but it may not come with software, or it may come with a player I don't like.

The answer is no. There isn't any free (excluding trial) software that will play Blu-Ray discs. – Catchwa Jul 26 '10 at 3:50

I purchased a Blu Ray drive not long ago. It came with PowerDVD. I hated it, I could not however find any free media player that played Blu Ray Discs.

PowerDVD, Total Media Theater, and CyberDVD are the only players I'm aware of that will play blu ray.

Note: I had loads of trouble getting my Blu Rays to play properly (i.e. not skipping) using PowerDVD. CyberDVD doesn't have Blu Ray support in its trial version. Total Media Theater did I believe (in fact it wasn't until this was installed that PowerDVD worked).

It is a nice feature on my desktop PC but it was quite the hassle to get working and I'm running a nice gaming rig.

Corel WinDVD Pro 2010 can play Blu-Ray discs. Other possible options are ArcSoft TotalMedia Theater and Cyberlink PowerDVD 10.

These are all paid programs; the question specifically asks for "free" – Daniel Oct 4 '10 at 17:10
