I made an Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 VM with VirtualBox, using MacOSX as the host operating system. Any utilities that use the internet, such as Firefox, can't load. On my host computer I am connected to an Airport network which is not plugged into my computer. How can I set up VirtualBox and/or Ubuntu to let Ubuntu use that network too.

It should automatically use the airport connection. You can enable networking in the settings for the virtual machine and choose what NIC to emulate. Should work with or without the Guest Additions.

I added network to the boot order (it was unchecked) and ran the virtual machine. It says it is connected to "Auto eth0", but the internet doesn't work. – None Jun 27 '10 at 3:40
Apparently NAT is supposed to use the host's network but for some reason it doesn't. When I boot I see an error for a second that says something along the lines of "getpwuid_r failed", but the boot doesn't fail altogether. In the top-right of Ubuntu it says "wired connections" and shows "eth0" but that's it. It doesn't show wireless connections, which is what my host is hooked up to. – None Jun 27 '10 at 21:04
It will not show it as a wireless network if your host is wireless, it will just show it as a regular wired network since that is what is supported by the virtual machine. – Cheesebaron Jun 28 '10 at 1:08
Oh. I was connected to eth0 and it worked for a while but then stopped working out of the blue. So it seems that the connection is not consistent. – None Jun 30 '10 at 17:15

I would put that NIC into bridged mode in VBox settings, after that you should be good to go.
