Possible Duplicate:
Free Windows ISO Mounting Software

I download a lot of images from MSDN and they have an ISO mounting tool available for use but it's not very slick. I've heard of Daemon Tools but haven't tried it. Does anyone have anything they particularly like?

Virtual Clone Drive from Slysoft is free.

I like this over Daemon tools because it works and doesn't come with non-related software I'm not interested in (yes, you can uncheck it but still...; unless you get the older version). It also feels more configurable. – Nazadus Jul 15 '09 at 18:12

This is my preferred one now a days. Easy to install, no extra fluff. – DMan Jun 29 '10 at 0:16
Highly recommended. Simple, clean, and just works! – Johnny W May 14 '11 at 19:05

Daemon Tools has too much adware these days. I kept with it for a while, but they kept making it more and more difficult to install without adware / spyware. I worry about that more since Daemon Tools installs a rootkit to circumvent CD copy protection - I don't mind a "good rootkit", but not when it's mixed up with adware and spyware.

I like MagicISO - the free version does a great job mounting ISO images and works well in Vista.

I fullheartedly agree about MagicISO. The only downside is that you have to remove it from your Startup folder after install. – Stuart P. Bentley Mar 15 '09 at 13:18
Does Magic ISO work with Vista 64 bit? If not, does anyone know what does? – BrianK Jul 10 '09 at 15:45
Virtual Clone Drive works fine with Vista & Win7 64. l – Dog Ears Aug 12 '09 at 7:03

I still use Daemon Tools. You can install it without adware, and I've never seen any spyware with it. – TopBanana Apr 3 '10 at 10:02
All the adware Daemon has is optional. (and that's that way since years) – Deniz Aug 12 '10 at 12:18

Not sure if this is the tools that you currently have, but I have used this quite a few times with no real problems:

Readme for Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel v2.0.1.1

THIS TOOL IS UNSUPPORTED BY MICROSOFT PRODUCT SUPPORT SERVICES

System Requirements
===================
- Windows XP Home or Windows XP Professional

Installation instructions
=========================
1. Copy VCdRom.sys to your %systemroot%\system32\drivers folder.
2. Execute VCdControlTool.exe
3. Click "Driver control"
4. If the "Install Driver" button is available, click it. Navigate to the %systemroot%\system32\drivers folder, select VCdRom.sys, and click Open.
5. Click "Start"
6. Click OK
7. Click "Add Drive" to add a drive to the drive list. Ensure that the drive added is not a local drive. If it is, continue to click "Add Drive" until an unused drive letter is available.
8. Select an unused drive letter from the drive list and click "Mount".
9. Navigate to the image file, select it, and click "OK". UNC naming conventions should not be used, however mapped network drives should be OK.

You may now use the drive letter as if it were a local CD-ROM device. When you are finished you may unmount, stop, and remove the driver from memory using the driver control.

This is what I used to use before MagicISO. Fairly unpolished, but portable and gets the job done. – Stuart P. Bentley Mar 15 '09 at 13:21

You should try Daemon Tools.

@Jon: You might be right about the ad ware in daemon tools. I'm using an old version which I haven't upgraded for over 6 moths now.

I also use Daemon Tools, yes you have to make sure you read every screen it gives you carefully if you don't want the adware, but the tool its self is great and once its installed, it works really well.

Alcohol 52% has a free version similar terms to Daemon tools( free with 'bundled toolbar') or has a 15 day trial.

Alcohol 52% can:

  • Make Images
  • Mount Images

They have also have Alcohol 120%(15 day trial) which allows burning of the produced images.

I tend to lean towards Daemon Tools Lite, though I've had major compatibility issues with my laptop (Satellite A210-MS9 and Vista) and it. Namely, if I install it, it borks my entire OS to the point where I have to wipe my drive and restore from factory CDs :(

I just found out that PowerArchiver has a very nice one built in to their pro version. I use to like Nero's however, it is not supported in 64bit.

We used to use VCdControlTool.exe, but stopped a few years ago because it does not work on 64-bit Windows.

We currently use MagicISO. It's part of our OS images for Vista, Server 2003, and Server 2008. Highly recommended.

PowerISO is very good as it is compatible with nearly all images including in-house images made by magicISO etc (.daa) etc.

Virtual CloneDrive is freeware, supports up to 8 virtual drives at the same time, and is simple to use. I'm using it with Windows 7.

WinCDEmu is easy to install and use. Just right click an .iso and click mount. You don't need anything running in the background either.
