Gmail does not let me set my default font settings

Is there a shortcut to use a font which I use regularly?

Adjusting Font type and size in every email is a laborious job.

EDIT: Any feature involving very few clicks will do (should not be dependent on any other application)

I hope you are not going to ask for a default colour setting next... – grawity Jul 30 '09 at 17:57

How can setting a custom font in an email service be so "Urgent!!"? – Jonik Jul 30 '09 at 18:30

Marking a question as '[URGENT!!]' is not likely to make people help you, it will have the opposite effect. – Dentrasi Jul 30 '09 at 18:31

Oops, i agree i should not have marked it urgent. But it is very important and i am at my wits end to solve it satisfactorily – Rishi Jul 30 '09 at 18:34

@grawity Just because this is a community for programmers & technically competent people does not mean that you will be rude. People who are accustomed to using Outlook will not upgrade to Gmail unless their work is made easier not more difficult.Adjusting Font type and size in every email is a laborious job. – Rishi Jul 30 '09 at 18:44

This is not currently possible, unfortunately. There is a Gmail Labs add-on that adds a menu option to view a message in a fixed width font, though. Some info on that add-on here:

@Rishi: The Canned Responses trick is not really valid, though, as a) it's not actually changing the default -- you still have to select a font style from the canned responses menu, and b) (as you indicate) it's only reliable on the client side, as the recipient may or may not have the font being used. – arathorn Jul 30 '09 at 17:17
Well thats the only solution other than pasting from another application. I spent an entire day looking for a fix from greasemonkey scripts to modifying the script to my default font type & size. <br> About Fixed Font width thats easily implemented but thats off topic and only lets me see maybe tables or very rare bit diagrams – Rishi Jul 30 '09 at 17:20
@Rishi: Right, that's why I said it's not currently possible. ;) – arathorn Jul 30 '09 at 17:32

Gmail Default Font

Works great by using Gmail Labs - Canned Responses

It wont work when the font type is not a common one and not available on the receiver's computer

This functionality is now available in a Gmail Labs feature called Default Text Styling. It seems to mostly work.
