Are there any freeware tools for messaging within a LAN. I have come across IPMSG and BorgChat, but I find their UI to be not so appealing. Any other alternatives?

How About squiggle ? Its free/open source LAN client.

You could run your own Jabber/XMPP server on your LAN and have your users use this?

You can run server-free Bonjour (aka ZeroConf aka Avahi) and an instant messenger who is capable of this, eg. Pidigin.

You just install Bonjour, and Pidgin (or an other programm supporting Bonjour) detects available users in the lan. Works on Windows, Linux, *BSD, Mac.

works on mostly meant that no matter what client you have, the bonjour stuff takes away a lot of pain in the lan (well, except that you have to route it between several subnets :)) – akira Jun 30 '10 at 14:34

You could try Teamtalk - it is free for team size of up to 5. Works across Windows & Mac. Also offers file/folder sharing and remote desktop.

Have you tried Softros LAN Messenger? Interface is very friendly, but the minus is 30 free days trial only.
