I want to know is there any anti-virus software installed by default on Mac OS X? Or do I even want to install it? Is anti-virus software necessary to protect Mac OS X from viruses?

Currently, I don't have any type of anti-virus software on my Mac machine.

I have been using macs since OS X debuted without AV protection and I have not ever gotten a virus. Having said that, if you want to add AV protection then take a look at Clam AV, which is a free and open source anti-virus program for OS X.

Or you could get McAfee internet security... I'm not sure if it's out of beta yet, but the beta's free, the site is here. Not sure if it affects performance though.

As of September or August it is out of beta and not free. – Vervious Sep 12 '10 at 4:26
