I'm looking for a cloud computing provider based in the UK. Can anyone recommend a suitable provider? Ideally with ssh access, fully configurable server, *nix preferable. (Essentially something like S3, but based in the UK).

Amazon S3 does have a storage solution in Ireland:

A bucket can be stored in one of several Regions. You can choose a Region to optimize for latency, minimize costs, or address regulatory requirements. Amazon S3 is currently available in the US Standard, EU (Ireland), US West (Northern California) and Asia Pacific (Singapore) Regions. The US Standard Region automatically routes requests to facilities in Northern Virginia or the Pacific Northwest using network maps.

The only thing I can imagine you mean by "based in" would be legal jurisdiction or patriotism. It's nearly always the jurisdiction governing the physical server that governs the data, so a UK-based storage location = GBR jurisdiction.

Is it a question of patronizing local business?

EDIT: To pop the answer to the top (which is now in comments below): check out Humyo, www.humyo.com. They offer cloud computing storage with data centres in Manchester. However, their offering is not REALLY the same as S3, but it seems like it might be worth a look. They were acquired two weeks ago by Top Micro, though, so you may wish to conduct to due some due diligence to ensure that their data centres won't suddenly be moved outside the country to somewhere cheaper.

Thanks, but Ireland is not in the UK. – Noel M Jul 4 '10 at 20:08
I had a feeling you might say that. But instead of giving a snide remark and downvoting, perhaps you could give some more information that would help in providing you a reasonable answer. See my edit. – msanford Jul 4 '10 at 20:16
I want the server located in the UK so that it has a UK IP address. – Noel M Jul 4 '10 at 20:16
Well, msanford, your edit wasn't there at that time. I assumed that you hadn't read the question properly. Was happy to remove the down vote after receiving more info thanks. – Noel M Jul 4 '10 at 20:18
That's useful information. In that case, take a look at Humyo (humyo.com), their (at least web) servers are in Manchester. (See elaboration and caveat above.) – msanford Jul 4 '10 at 20:24
