My father always says, he can be composing music by humming some melody but it only occur once... and he always ask if there are programs that record the melody he sings, and give the musical note (like the one pianist put on top of the piano when playing)...

I don't know of any free programs which do this, but Finale (which is very expensive) can.

Sibelius is a competitor which can probably do the same thing, and there are cheaper products made by the same companies that might also have that capability. But it's a reasonably complicated task so I wouldn't be too surprised if there's no free alternative. – David Zaslavsky Jul 11 '10 at 5:13
