I used an online tool, more than one year ago, that let me check which operating system was running a remove server by providing its URL. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of that webpage.

So, do you know any online service that allows me to do so?

BuiltWith will tell you what libraries and such they are using.

NetCraft will tell you what OS they are using, along with several other statistics.

http://nmap-online.com/, except you have to use the ip address instead of the url.
