I need a CMS which is very simple for the "owners" to use. Ie to be able to add "posts" to the front page which have a read more feature.

Basically if an "owner" logs in I want it to add a "New Post" button to the top of the site, and add edit buttons to all the articles. So that it is very simple to add a new post.

But I also at the same time want it to be powerful to customize (like theme and plugins and stuff so that you could make 2 websites with this CMS and not know they were using the same CMS) for me the "developer"

Also preferably there is a section of the site which can only be accessed by certain user groups (ie not the public)

I have looked at Joomla, but the whole articles, categorys, sections and the menus is a little confusing for me let alone "owners" of a website.

I have seen Moodle (a CMS for schools and such) which lets IT Techs completely customize the site, the teachers have a button, "Turn editing on" which they can click to add resources and posts to their areas (so a Maths teach could add content to the Maths area but not the English area) This is kind of what I what except not for education.

(btw the double quotes are used as the terms within them are quite loose)

I recommend Wordpress, it is easy to use and very customizable.

It's a very simple publishing tool, however it can be used as a CMS and there are tons of tutorials on how to do that. The latest release added support for multisite so you will be able to run '2 websites' like you want, and there are literally thousands of themes to choose from or you could make your own one.

I hope this is useful.

Am not sure this suits you well but Silverstripe (www.silverstripe.org) gives you most of the things you asked for with a great ease of usage & flexible customizations.

+1 for SilverStripe. I've used it quite a bit. It's got the occasional glitch, but is extremely customizable, has a fair amount of modules already created by users, and templating works pretty well. – nhinkle Jul 17 '10 at 22:03

The simpler CMS you have, the easier it is to customize. My advice is not to shop for the most advanced you can find, but rather get what you need now and migrate a couple of years from now instead. The really advanced CMS systems is very time consuming to customize.

Here is a really good starting point for findig out whats out there.
