For building a DIY video projector, I'm looking for an LCD monitor that is both as high resolution as possible, and as small as possible.

Have you ever seen a (reasonably priced) 15 or 17 inch LCD monitor with resolution higher than 1440?

I realize that some 17" laptops have been made with 1920 screens, and I would like to avoid having to use a laptop just for the display, but it might come down to that.

You're looking for high DPI displays. – emddudley Jul 19 '10 at 4:23
There were some news about this. 15 and 17" display with really huge resolution. Maybe they were japanese or something. No sign of actual products though. – Shiki Jul 19 '10 at 14:19

I've just had a look on newegg, and there aren't any 15/17" monitors higher than 1440. The smallest was 20" with 1600 x 900.

A lot of new phones have really high DPI (Dots per inch). You could try and find a broken phone (screen intact, but broken harddrive or other hardware) and buy it cheap from craigslist.
