I want to find the ownership history for a domain name I am interested in purchasing. I want to know who has owned it previously. Is there an authoritative database with ownership history? If so, where and is it publicly accessible? Or are there just commercial entities that maintain their own database of history?

DomainTools.com offer registrar history as part of their paid membership. I never signed up so I can't tell if the data is accurate, but I use their great free services on a daily basis so there's a good chance the members-only features are useful too. | |||
