Make sure your root certificates are up to date. If the operating system you installed is old the root certs may have expired by now. To fix this install your OS upgrades (may be listed in the upgrade manager as optional). – Daisetsu Jul 20 '10 at 16:55
I dont know if it helps; but when I'm in Croatia I can use pidgin to use log in into google talk; but when I go visit my parents in Bosnia; I can no longer use pidgin to connect to google. Rest of internet is fine; I get same error as U from pidgin. Also pidgin msn works fine; and web based chat in firefox on gmail works fine. – bbaja42 Sep 11 '10 at 10:56

I have seen this a few times although never specifically for Google, just SSL/HTTPS sites in general.

First thing to try is to update your clock/date and make sure it is set correctly.

Next, if you are still having problems try going through Windows update and making sure that all the root certificates are up to date. (Although, this shouldn't affect Firefox).

I hope this helps, but I am not 100% sure as if it is just Google, it is quite a weird error.

From Google Help: "If you can't sign in to Google Talk, or you're receiving an error that says, Could not authenticate to server, check if you have personal firewall software installed, or if your computer is behind a proxy server that requires a username and password."

Make sure you made any updates for XP related to Security Certificates / Certificate Authorities. It sounds like Google is using some certificate that your browser doesn't recognize as valid. CAs are up to the operating system, not the browser (though you can set exceptions in the latter if you want).

Do your time and date set correctly on your PC? It is a must and a common problem.
