I'm looking for peoples opinion on wireless music streaming devices - something like this. I have an iTunes library hosted on an ubuntu server and I'm looking for something to allow me to listen to all the albums stored on it.

Ideally, it should provide a good quality playback both over headphones and through speakers so that everyone can hear it. It doesn't need to be ultra-portable - being able to move the system and plug in a mains lead should be enough, so a single, integrated unit is preferable.

One product per answer please and if you've used a product, vote it up or down depending on whether it's any good or not. Use comments to highlight good/bad points.

Can't imagine sound quality or volume being particularly good, especially without headphones, nor would it be able to stream music from the server without 802.11 - not many phone have that. – Skizz Jul 21 '10 at 9:30
Any android device can do that over wifi or 3G just look up android streaming music and you will be endowed with millions of apps for your needs – admintech Jul 21 '10 at 21:10
But a phone isn't ideal for putting in the corner of a room for everyone to listen to, or if you're doing something and don't want to carry the thing around with you (e.g. painting/decorating). Perhaps I should edit the question to identify typical use cases. – Skizz Jul 22 '10 at 15:36

I have a Logitech Squeezebox Boom it can attach to your network via either wired ethernet or WiFi, connecting via WiFi means that you can easily move from room to room and just plug in to power. It produces a very clear, loud, room-filling sound (I've never had the volume over half-way and easily fills any room in my house). I have it connected to a Windows Home Server that stores all my music collection, but there are versions of Squeezebox Server for most OSs including Ubuntu. It does have a headphone socket, but can't say I've ever used it.

It can be controlled via it's remote control and front panel, or a web-app from any PC on the network (there are included skins for the web app suitable for small screen devices like phones) and there are controller apps available for smart phones like Android and iPhones.

How is it for browsing through a large music collection? I have 31,000+ songs, which translate to thousands of albums. Can it browse by artist, album, genre etc...? Couldn't find much about that on the Logitech web site... – MetalMikester Sep 3 '10 at 13:04
@Metal It all depends which interface you're using (on device, web page, or a mobile app) but you always have options to list by title, artist, album, genre, year, and newly added music. Some interfaces have more options than that. The web page and mobile client have a good, useful search box, there is a search on the device, but that's not as easy to use. Scrolling through long lists on the device is easy with the big wheel on the front. Interface on the Radio is almost exactly this wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezePlayUI – GAThrawn Sep 3 '10 at 19:34
