I'm using a mac, and something's bothering me. I can't seem to figure out that bottom margin where I can see the desktop for maybe 8 pixels? Even when I use fully expanded windows or click and drag the corners they can only go so far down. I also just noticed that my mouse pointer can't even go that far down.

Any solutions?

Do you have Dock hiding on - and how tall is your Dock? – Chealion Jul 25 '10 at 18:51
Yes, I have dock hiding on - not sure about it's height though. – Matthew Jul 26 '10 at 0:10

This isn't a software problem. The fact is that the screen doesn't extend all the way to the edge of the panel. If you counted, pixel by pixel (like I have on my 15" MacBook pro), there are 1440x900 active pixels. On the newer MBPs, they have done a better job at filling the entire panel with active pixels. The border you're complaining about is built-in to the panel (and it's like that on most laptops you'd find).

According to your comment to Paul R's answer, what you're seeing is actually the space that the dock reserves for itself. It also helps emphasize the shadows of the windows. There's no way (to my knowledge) to change this (although myself and many other Mac users I've talked to much prefer this). Apparently, this can be changed by moving the dock to the left or right side of the screen.

Oh - he's a noob who still has his dock on the bottom of the screen - that may explain it then. [Later] Actually I just tried moving my dock back to the bottom of the screen and I still don't see a problem even then - the mouse and the bottom of windows can still go all the way to the bottom of the screen. – Paul R Jul 24 '10 at 21:48
Actually, if I change the dock to the left of the screen (which I guess makes me a "pro" instead of a "noob" apparently), I can extend the window all the way to the bottom. But as soon as I switch the dock to the bottom, the window can't extend that far anymore. (The window doesn't switch immediately, just if I minimize it or something) – Matthew Jul 24 '10 at 22:22

It sounds like a problem with your monitor. What Mac, graphics card and monitor are you using ?

No, I don't think it's that, it's more like everyone has it, I'm just hoping I can change it. Do you have a mac? When the window is completely expanded, do you see 8 pixels worth of the desktop background at the bottom of the screen? – Matthew Jul 24 '10 at 21:09
Yes, I have more Macs than I can count here, and I've never seen this "problem" with any of them. Which is why I suggested that it might a problem which is specific to your particular configuration. You still haven't said what kind of Mac/graphics card/monitor you're using, BTW. – Paul R Jul 24 '10 at 21:47
