Possible Duplicate:
Screenshot utilities for Windows

I ended up downloading SnagIt just to take a screenshot of a menu item with Free Trial license for 30 days.

I cannot seem to justify paying $49.90 for an occasional screenshot printing.

Are there any free alternatives to SnagIt screenshot capture program?

Good question, +1. One thing SnagIt does that I haven't found a free alternative for is the capture of scrolling windows. To those of you providing an answer to this question, could you please comment if your alternative has that feature? Thank you. – Chris W. Rea Aug 2 '09 at 1:05

I would recommend Greenshot:

Greenshot is a revolutionary screenshot tool optimized for productivity.

  • Save a screenshot or a part of the screen to a file within a second.
  • Apply text and shapes to the screenshot.
  • Offers capture of window, region or full screenshot.
  • Supports several image formats.

+1 Cropper - I've used it over the past 2 or 3 years, and it's great. – jmsmcfrlnd Aug 2 '09 at 1:19

It's ancient, but it can still get the job done, quite nicely, for free. MWSnap

On Windows I just use Print Screen or Alt + Print Screen for a single window. Drop in Paint / Paint.NET / Gimp and edit away.

My main use for capturing scrolling windows is web pages, for which I use the Screengrab! Firefox extension.

+1 I've never seen a need for any 3rd party screen grabbing app – Ciaran Aug 2 '09 at 1:03

@Ciaran: Scrolling windows. I don't particularly like wasting my time stitching multiple images together. 'nuff said. – Chris W. Rea Aug 2 '09 at 1:08

My main 'scrolling windows' capture use is web pages, which I recently discovered the Firefox extension "Screengrab!" screengrab.org. – opello Aug 2 '09 at 1:10
Never actually considered people taking screen prints of whole windows (or web pages). The only reason I've ever seen fit to take a screen cap has been to prove a point (errors, specific accounts... small things that can normally be achieved with alt+print screen). – Ciaran Aug 2 '09 at 1:19

PrintScreen only works if you need only one screenshot. If you need to take several in a row, it's cumbersome to alt-tab to MSpaint or another application (especially when you sometimes need to take a shot every second.) – Raymond Martineau Aug 2 '09 at 8:15

I like Gadwin PrintScreen. I've found the free one is good enough for me.

I'd recommend the free version of FastStone Capture which I've used for a year or so. The current version is shareware but the last free version (v5.3) is still available. It runs on all versions of Windows, and captures the usual rectangular or freehand area, window, object and also a scrolling web page. It will also let you highlight and notate the image and will run from a USB stick.

This and other screen capture utilities are discussed at techsupportalert.com.

Screenshot Captor is an excellent SnagIt replacement, made by mouser from DonationCoder.

It's getting a bit dated but I use PrintKey2000 on XP and it works very well.

The author has since released a commercial version PrintKey Pro which is cheaper than Snag-It.

Fireshot for Firefox / IE... (which is where 95% of my screenshots are taken) and XnView for the rest (anywhere in Windows). For the record, XnView does all kinds of things with images beyond screenshots... from batch conversion, to slide shows an all kinds of filtering.

You can try Jing Project. Apart from saving to your local system, Jing can also upload to Screencast.com, Flickr and also to any FTP site. Jing captures images and videos as well
