It seems from what I've read that buying a mini displayprot to vga and vga to S-Video will not work. Here's a related thread on Apple's forums. Users there say this thing works.

I have an old DisplayPort to RCA adapter. Would getting a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapter between them work, or do the connectors work somehow fundamentally differently? – jelovirt Aug 3 '10 at 7:54
I don't know if it will work, but I think that it should work. – AndrejaKo Aug 3 '10 at 8:13
