Is there a way I can disable the touchpad (when I'm using a mouse)?

I want to disable the touchpad because I often accidentally tap the touchpad while typing, often clicking something I did not intend to click.

The laptop I have been using before (Acer Aspire something) had a Fn+??? key combination to toggle the touchpad, but unfortunately, my Dell Studio XPs 16 does not.

I know it is possible with the custom drivers, but I would prefer not to use them (hence the bloatware tag).

All of those answers either point to installing the custom software, or physically disconnecting it. I'm not really confortable with that last thing. – horsedrowner Aug 16 '10 at 21:09

If you're running Windows 7, 64bit, go to the synaptec website and download the new 64bit driver/software, it will have additional settings allowing you to at the least reduce the pressure settings for the device.

Although in my question I was looking for ways without installing this, I settled with this anyway. – horsedrowner Nov 11 '10 at 6:52

Disable it in Device manager.

I have HID device and PS/2 compatible device, the HID is my USB mouse, and the PS/2 compatible device can't be disabled (greyed out) – horsedrowner Aug 16 '10 at 21:08
Your right, it cannot be disabled, all I can suggest is to affix a thin piece of cardboard or similar over top of the touch pad. – Moab Aug 17 '10 at 0:48
