What's the best way to bypass the annoying choice of adding a feed to either Google Reader or iGoogle?

What I'm after; pressing RSS-link -> added feed to Google Reader.

For Chrome, there is actually an extension that makes this pretty easy. It automatically appears in the toolbar when RSS feeds are detected on the page. Default settings preview the feed before subscribing, but this can be changed to add directly to the reader of your choice without opening an intermediate page.

I use a similar extension but this is a really fast and no-extra-page-loads-in-your-way-way to do it :) – chelmertz Jun 15 '11 at 20:50

Assuming you are using Firefox, visit the address about:config to pull up the all the browsers hidden settings and use the search box to filter down to browser.contentHandlers.

Here you should see an entry for browser.contentHandlers.types.2.uri. The default value is http://fusion.google.com/add?feedurl=%s. You want to change this to http://www.google.com/reader/view/feed/%s.

Now note that browser.contentHandlers.auto.application/vnd.mozilla.maybe.feed holds the current URL that Firefox is using for feeds. You can set this manually to the above URL, or you can clear the value stored there, restart Firefox, and populate this value again under Tools (look for Web Feed in the Applications tab).

In Firefox, I use Better GReader. In this add-on options, subscribing tab, choose "(Bypass iGoogle choice)", and I also choose "smart subscribe", too.

Install Feedly (available for Firefox, Chrome and soon iPhone/iPad/Android). This is an excellent replacement for the Google Reader interface that feels less like an inbox and more like a magazine. Feeds you add in the future will be added directly to Google Reader (via Feedly).

I'm rather happy with the UI of Google Reader, thanks. – chelmertz Aug 17 '10 at 9:17
