I'm looking for a good, high-quality program that puts Google Voice on your desktop...My biggest focus is SMS, and desktop alerts.

There is no official desktop client, and I'm unaware of any third party solutions. However, you can set Google Voice to email you whenever you receive an SMS. Combined with either the desktop Google Talk client's email notifications or the Gmail notifier desktop application, you could receive those notifications (and your email notifications) on the desktop.

Try GVNotifier.

GVNotifier is a powerful app that brings Google Voice right to your Windows desktop. Quickly send or receive messages, listen to or read voicemail, connect calls and more.

If you use Chrome, it has a Google Voice extension that is pretty nice. Not exactly desktop but pretty close.
