My iPod Nano is getting a little old, and it recently froze. How exactly do I restart it?

Apple has a very extensive list of iPods, and their various ways of restarting. For the Nano, they suggest the following:

  1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

Option 2 above has always worked for me. Occasionally it takes longer than the 6-8 seconds, so I just wait until the screen clears and the Apple logo appears. Then you can release the buttons and let the iPod continue to boot.
