Apple has a very extensive list of iPods, and their various ways of restarting. For the Nano, they suggest the following:

Option 2 above has always worked for me. Occasionally it takes longer than the 6-8 seconds, so I just wait until the screen clears and the Apple logo appears. Then you can release the buttons and let the iPod continue to boot. | |||
