I have a domainname that is set to expire in a month.

I want to change registrars, without paying for a transfer fee. Can I just let it expire and register it again...or will the current registrar take control of it and charge a lot to get it back?

You have been misinformed of what the transfer fee actually is.

You can always let a domain expire and buy it from scratch, but from the date it expires, it can take over three months to actually be available for registration - and you will not be treated special, anyone can register.

When you transfer a domain, the fee includes one year renewal. On top of this, usually, a transfer fee is cheaper than renewing for a year (host dependent).

If a new place is trying to charge you extra, or a transfer fee on top - find a different place.

If however you are saying your existing place is trying to charge for transferring out, I am not sure they are allowed to do this, but it depends on the contract you had when signing up.

Ahh, thanks, I forgot that the transfer fee actually normally includes a year... – Bill Sep 7 '10 at 2:04
