Having bought a lot of tech stuff during these years, the best devices i've enjoyed the most are the ones upgradable with open-source firmwares.
To name some of these:

Could you recommend any other devices that can be upgraded with open-source firmwares?

Questions on Super User are expected to generally relate to computer software or computer hardware in some way, within the scope defined in the faq. Questions about shopping recommendations are considered off topic on Super User. Questions within this scope are better fit on a Q&A website like area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/20084/… which is currently in commitment/definition phase. Your contribution will help it come alive. - Voting to close – BloodPhilia Sep 8 '10 at 21:57

Linksys routers!

The DD-WRT firmware is so far beyond the OEM firmware it's not even funny. I especially love the power tuning features, which let you overload the antennae up to 20x the default power.

I never used Cannon cameras myself, but from what I've read and heard, CHDK guys seem to be doing great job!

Another great project is NSLU2 from Linksys. People made significant progress with free firmwares for it.
