Is TrueCrypt the best way to encrypt files? I plan to be backing up my files using Jungledisk and manually creating disk images on Mac using Disk Utility is a bit of a hassle.

Is TrueCrypt a really reliable program for encryption? It has quite a scary interface and I'm afraid data might be lost.

If you are going to backing up via JungleDisk, TrueCrypt seems to be an unnecessary extra layer.

You can configure the JungleDisk application to encrypt your files before they are uploaded, so your data is on the server in encrypted form. They are only decrypted when downloaded back to your computer. Only you will know the encryption key, so keep it safe.

This is what we do at work for all of our Jungledisk backups. Works great! – steve.lippert Sep 10 '10 at 2:17

If you want to archive and encrypt your files before you upload them I can recommend 7zip. It is not only the best solution I know for compressing, but also supports AES-256 encryption. It is also open source.

If you want really strong encryption and perhaps share files with others you should take a look at gnupg.

I have been using TrueCrypt for almost a year now and no data lost yet. From my experience its very reliable. I have not auditioned any other related software as my experience with True Crypt has been satisfactory, so I can't comment on that.

Its not too scary an interface you just have to get used to it.
