I have a Netgear WPN824 wireless router, and I'm trying to extend its range with another router - TPLink TL WR841. I did the following steps:

  1. I changed the TPL ip address to be in the same subnet as my netgear (netgear is 192.168.1.1, my tpl is now 192.168.1.250).
  2. Set up the netgear's dhcp server to give addresses between 192.168.1.100-192.168.1.200 only.
  3. Turned off the dhcp server on the TPL.
  4. Turned off security on both routers.
  5. Turned on WDS on the Netgear router as "Wireless Base Station" and put in the TPL MAC.
  6. Turned on WDS on the TPL and chose the Netgear's SSID (also typed in its MAC).

I also made sure they're on the same channel (6) and changed the mode of the TPL to be 11g only because my Netgear is 11g.

On my computer, I set up a static ip address: 192.168.1.100. The TPL shows on its status page: "Wds Status: Run" which according to the help on that page means: "Run: Associated successfully." However - no luck. I connect to my TPL and yet I cannot use my internet connection or even ping my Netgear router.

I'm getiing desperate... any suggestions?

Thanks.

In the administration screen on the netgear, do you see the TPL as an active device under connections? – JNK Sep 9 '10 at 17:10
No. It is not listed as one of the "attached devices". – john Sep 9 '10 at 17:12
OK so it's an issue in step 5 or 6... – JNK Sep 9 '10 at 17:16
My Netgear never says explicitly "WDS", it has a "Wireless Repeating Function". Can I assume it's the same? Any other suggestions for what I can do? – john Sep 9 '10 at 17:18
Wireless repeating is a mode of WDS. I'm reading more now and WDS is not certified implemention (i.e. no industry standard), which may be the source of your headaches. – JNK Sep 9 '10 at 17:23
