vmnetcfg.exe is required when you want to configure multiple network interfaces (e.g. one local and one wireless) in the same machine.

But where is it?

A bug in the installer prevents the installation of the tool vmnetcfg.exe

Run setup again like this from Command Prompt (CMD):

VMware-player-3.1.1-282343.exe /e .\vmplayer

In vmplayer subdir you will find network.cab - extract it in explorer or 7zip, then find vmnetcfg.exe and copy to c:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Player

I ran into this problem several times before and found the answer in some obscure forum. Figure I'd post the answer here for others and also for me in case I need it again :)

In 4.0.2 the network.cab file has 0 length. – user12826 Mar 14 at 14:32
Worked for me, using 4.0.2 – Gabe Moothart Apr 12 at 23:07

I'm going to just add that this issue persists even with 4.0.3. The steps still work as expected though. I created a shortcut to the file in my start menu as well. I'll report to VMware so we may be able to get this resolved.

Update: Got a response from VMware. Apparently it is packaged intentionally but normally only installed if VMware Workstation is being installed. The application provides advanced functions so this isn't a bug and isn't likely to be addressed in a future version at all. This would also explain why there is a lack of direct accessibility to this item in the player application.

Update: Thanks to a duplicate ticket (got submitted twice via email from same email somehow...) I got these directions from a support rep. They do reflect they are allowing manual extraction of the file as it isn't breaking any rules or anything of the such. They are identical to the original answer version so no need to repost it again but I just wanted to confirm for others in case anyone was wondering if they were breaking any EULA or TOS restrictions.
