I usually close my laptop or manually suspend it and when I go to hit a button to wake it up I see the login screen... but I can't type anything for my password. I have to wait 4-5 minutes and suddenly it goes to a screensaver and then I hit a button again and that wakes it up.

What's up with this behaviour?

It's a bug. To diagnose the bug, more information is needed. What is your exact laptop model? What kernel version, X window version, and video driver do you run? What shows up in /var/log/messages between moment you press the suspend button and the moment you can use your computer again? – Gilles Sep 17 '10 at 18:03
Indeed that is a bug. Could you please report it via the Debian bug tracking system so it stays on the radar? – Simon Richter May 11 '11 at 10:33
