i'm looking for a certain 3d software which i checked out a while ago but can't remember its name. it was freeware i think and it was possible to create complex fractals and all kinda thing through somekind of scripting engine which were stored in a textfile. i tried googling but couldn't find it - anyone knows which it is?

Possibly you are referring to Apophysis, a free fractal drawing project supporting scripts.

Another possibility is SpaceTime, which looks like a more evolved product.

If not, some more free fractal-drawing products are described in the
Freebyte's Guide to Free Graphics Software.

Here is an overview of some fractal software for Linux. Here is a list for Mac and Windows.

Apophysis for Windows.

Ultrafractal can output results to POVRay.

If you've got the math skills, POVRay is probably fully capable of rendering all the fractals you'd want.

Then there's Sourceforge, which probably doesn't host the specific software you're thinking of, but may have something similar.
