I'd like to create some abstract 3D wallpapers so I'm looking for an easy (maybe free) 3D software which enables me to do scattered renders of primitives. I'm thinking about loading a cuboid, apply rounded corners then multiply it, maybe make it transparent and row the instances up as spiral.

You could for example use Google SketchUp, which is pretty strong on these simple manipulation.

Another vote for Sketchup! Also, I have got some nice results by exporting my Sketchup models through Kerkythea. It's a bit more advanced than pure Sketchup but it's easier than, say, Maya and you can get some nice results. – Mr_Chimp Jun 10 '11 at 9:30

old, well-known Milkshape 3D.

Milkshape is really good for beginners. Works really well, has a lot of support and plugins, and is really easy to use. It's not free though, but it's only $25. – Joel Sep 18 '10 at 20:34

You could look at Blender.

I second MaQleod's recommendation of Blender.

Specifically, you could use Blender to create your primitive then apply a couple of array modifiers using different transformations to make the spirals that you want. For inspiration, search for "Blender array modifier" on Youtube to see some cool animations of what can be done.

you can try Anim8or - small, relatively user-friendly (compared to Blender), portable and also free.
