I'd like to create some abstract 3D wallpapers so I'm looking for an easy (maybe free) 3D software which enables me to do scattered renders of primitives. I'm thinking about loading a cuboid, apply rounded corners then multiply it, maybe make it transparent and row the instances up as spiral.

You could for example use Google SketchUp, which is pretty strong on these simple manipulation.

old, well-known Milkshape 3D.

I second MaQleod's recommendation of Blender. Specifically, you could use Blender to create your primitive then apply a couple of array modifiers using different transformations to make the spirals that you want. For inspiration, search for "Blender array modifier" on Youtube to see some cool animations of what can be done.

you can try Anim8or - small, relatively user-friendly (compared to Blender), portable and also free.
