LogMeIn Free is excellent! highly recommend!

AMMYY Admin is also a high-quality solution...it comes in one .exe file, and you can email it or direct the other user (in this case your mom) to download it. Have her run the .exe, read the number and press start. you input the number and press connect! Simple!

Also worth noting, in cases where you don't need remote control but only viewing, is a new product join.me , which is also published by LogMeIn. – eidylon Sep 21 '10 at 4:35

I like Ultra VNC for ease of use, but if you are ever need to access your mothers computer from a computer other than YOUR primary computer (i.e. a computer that does not have the VNC viewer installed) then another option would be the built in Remote Desktop connection that works through Internet Explorer, but from the sound of it Ultra VNC should do you just fine.

The down-side of this is you need to have a static ip or be running a DDNS service on the client pc. Unless your ISP provides them on all connections (and some do), she will have to discover her IP each time you need to connect. Also, I've had NAT and firewall problems using a program like VNC. – AkkA Sep 21 '10 at 3:20
Nah, that isn't a downside, that is just how it is. DDNS takes like 5 min to setup. You don't need anything special either. Many routers support it and if your router does not support it there are PC alternatives available that do the same thing regardless. – typoknig Sep 21 '10 at 3:51

Crossloop is the easiest and most user friendly method I've come across. It is free, secure, and deals gracefully with NATing.

She installs crossloop, you install crossloop. She clicks share, and gives you the key. You put it in and connect. After she accepts the connection, you can control her mouse and keyboard and she can watch. Great for remote support and remote tutoring.

I like Teamviewer http://teamviewer.com/index.aspx She can download and run the client from the Teamviewer website (portable; no install required); you then run the 'full' version for remote access into her PC. When she starts up the client, it will provide an ID and password that she reads to you over the phone. You enter it on your end, click go, and you are in.

Free for personal use, and highly recommended!

You can simply use Windows Report Desktop since your requirement is simple. If you are expecting an advanced solution you can think of an advanced product like Royal TS.
