• Preferably free software.
  • 2D or 3D.
  • It would be nice to see the output rendered with some textures.
  • It would also be nice to be able specify dimensions.
  • Something user-friendly without much of a learning curve.

I've thought of Google SketchUp, but looks like it could be nagware unless I buy. As regards, CAD programs - I wouldn't know where to start.

EDIT: Are there any good freeware CAD packages?

Just seen this and it looks like it is free - http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/design/virtualgarden_index.shtml

If you Google for Garden design software / landscaping software, there are tons of resources -

http://www.marshalls.co.uk/transform/garden_visualiser/

http://www.garden-network.co.uk/free-garden-design-software.php (seems to be a addon to Google Sketch up)

I just posted in another post about someone wanting to design a house - there are many ways and softwares to do it, but if you just want ease of use and to do this quickly, just get a software package designed for purpose.

I'd forgotten about the BBC one! I've just had a quick play and it looks very good. Thanks. – Umber Ferrule Aug 7 '09 at 10:13

At least for 2D you could use Visio. I stumbled over this article a while ago :-)

it's not free, but most companies have site licenses, and using it on your lunch break is a good way to learn it :) – warren Aug 23 '09 at 6:53

Try Draw Plus. The SE Version of this software is free.
