I'm trying to over-clock my i7 965 to 4.0Ghz and since it has an unlocked multiplier so I raised the multiplier to 30x directly and my motherboard (ASUS P6T Deluxe) automatically raised vcore to 1.4V. However, it freezes after 3 minutes of Prime95 and generating tons of heat(~90 degrees Celsius).

So after that I set vcore to 1.35 volts manually keeping the multiplier at 30x but unfortunately it doesn't even boot into windows. What could I try now? Should I keep the multiplier at default and raise BCLK? Does that make any difference?

I'm using Corsair H70 cooler + MX-3 thermal compound, just incase anyone asks.

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated!

It's going to generate that much heat. You obviously don't have adequate cooling to clock it that high - it's just that simple. This is fairly surprising for liquid cooling (I'm not familiar with that cooler but it looks fine) so there's got to be something else going on here, but I don't think it's a simple configuration matter... – Shinrai Sep 27 '10 at 17:10

I don't know a number offhand but I agree with you that it's too high. (It certainly would be higher than that air-cooled unless you had the thing in a wind tunnel, I suspect.) Is it possible your cooling loop is just small enough that you're saturating the heat capacity of the fluid? This seems INCREDIBLY unlikely but...how hot is the coolant? Yeah I've just completely redone my cooling, temps now are way better than before. I'm running 133 * 30 @ 1.376V with around 76 degrees Celsius at 100% load with Prime95. However its not completely stable, shall I add more voltage? Does anyone know the usual voltage required for an i7 965 overclocked to 4.0Ghz? Thanks. – user49081 Oct 11 '10 at 12:58
