How do I mark mail as read in Lotus Notes without actually opening the email? Every other email client I have used has this option somewhere. I am using Lotus Notes 8. Thank you.

Select your email messages and under Edit -> Unread Marks -> Mark Selected Read will do it.

Thanks, that did the trick! – Jim Fell Sep 27 '10 at 18:10
there is also an option to mark messages read when viewed in the preview pane, but damned if I cna find it right now – Chris Hulan Sep 27 '10 at 18:24
@Chris:In the user preferences dialog, in the 'Basic Notes Client Config section, you should see Mark Documents are read when viewed in the preview pane in the list of 'Additional Options'. This will affect all databases, not just email. – DaveParillo Sep 27 '10 at 23:01
Under Notes 8.5, it's: File > Preferences > Basic Notes Client Config > [x] Mark documents read when opened in preview pane – Leons Mar 16 '12 at 15:28

You can also hit the insert key to toggle read status.

On a mac you can type Shift+Command+U to toggle the read status. – h3nrik Feb 6 '14 at 12:30
My new lenovo doesn't have the insert button :( any thoughts? – Evert Jun 4 '14 at 21:49

The best way is to go to Preferences > Basic Notes Client Configuration > Additional Options > Mark documents read when opened in preview pane.

Assuming you are using Lotus Notes 8.5: Select multiple emails -> Right Click -> Mark As -> Read. Please note a check tick mark will be shown for all the selected emails.

In Lotus Notes 9 (I'm pretty sure it's the same as 8)

File -> Preferences...

File, Preferences

Basic Notes Client Configuration -> Mark documents read when opened...

Basic Notes Client Configuration, Mark documents read when opened
