i'm wondering if perhaps it's an sp2 vs sp3 issue.. can anybody test? – barlop Sep 28 '10 at 19:29
it's not an sp2 or sp3 issue. i've seen it working in both.. but at times had the flaw in sp2. – barlop Sep 29 '10 at 5:19

The problem, is (on the computer i'm testing with anyway - I don't know about others) when the taskbar is on the far left, a program started up and minimized, doesn't group.

The solution, is when it doesn't group, move it down to the bottom, (then it groups), then back to the left, and it stays grouped. Once it has started grouping, it continues grouping(so the bug doesn't remain, for that program's taskbar button). It's a bit of a workaround, but it'll have to do for now. It'd be good if anybody finds a better solution, one where the taskbar buttons just group!

UPDATE: I think it's probably down to these separator things i've circled. Moving them might make all the difference to whether they're grouped or not. If they're not grouped, moving them might make them grouped. It makes the space for windows smaller.. you can also change the width of the taskbar. sometimes the taskbar windows will go as small as little square buttons. Like if the taskbar is wide and the "separation bars" whatever those things i've circled are called, are close together. And in one click of, say, the notepad group, you see all the filenames. For cmd you may want to change the title (TITLE command, see HELP command)

You can even just click hold move it down to the bottom, then still holding, see it group, then move it back to the left, and release – barlop Oct 29 '10 at 12:34
i'm still finding even that technique is not working on a win xp sp3 machine. but i know of another guy with sp3 where it does w ork. – barlop Nov 4 '10 at 10:02
I suspect it was just down to the position of the separator things, circled in my updated answer. I haven't had the problem since being more aware of them. – barlop Aug 28 '11 at 18:37
