What options do I have to effortlessly play TV shows & movies (i.e. DivX & Xvid AVI videos) on my HD TV (that I haven't purchased yet)?

My requirements:

  • I want to watch videos I download, which would be in Xvid / DivX codecs and AVI containers, along with other popular formats.
  • I want to watch them on my TV, not my computer monitor.
  • These videos should be downloaded automatically. I know (and currently use) various Linux programs to achieve this.
  • I don't want to turn on a computer (and wait for it to boot) each time I want to watch TV.

My ideal solution is to have something like Tonido (a wall-plug Linux computer) to download my videos automatically and share it on LAN, while my TV natively supports UPnP and DivX & Xvid. However, I have not had much luck finding TVs that do this. Any TV recommendations?

Or, I can get a media player, like the Western Digital HD Live, CinemaTube, or Xtreamer Media Player and use it to play videos. But I'll still need something to download TV shows automatically. I can't find detailed information regarding support for this in these media players. If the support isn't great, I'll will need a wall plug computer to be on all the time.

But if I'm getting a media player, I could get an Xbox (I don't have a console yet) for an extra $100 or so.

Any recommendations for TVs, media players, or any other solutions?

If I post a question on SO asking if I should buy Visual Studio or SlickEdit, is that helping me shop too? I am asking for a computer hardware/software related set of tools to help me accomplish a task. – MTsoul Oct 4 '10 at 4:19

This seems like a valid question to me. I would vote to reopen if I had the rep. – typoknig Oct 4 '10 at 5:35
