How can I set the VLC icon only in Windows 7 system tray and not duplicated also in the taskbar?

To be clear (since some of the answers seem to misunderstand what is being asked), the question is not about minimizing to tray, but rather to leave the VLC window open and playing a video, but not show the VLC button on the taskbar (or in the Alt-Tab list).

I’m sure it’s been asked before (I could swear I’ve seen it discussed the last time I looked into it), but at the moment, all I can find is this single request for the feature which went completely ignored. –  Synetech Jun 11 '13 at 19:29

Right-click on the tray icon and click on 'hide VLC media player in taskbar'.

That option not present for me (Win7HP and VLC 2.05) –  gibberish May 23 '13 at 17:39

That option hides VLC altogether! –  Synetech Jun 11 '13 at 18:55

This works on my laptop -- Win7 Ultimate. @battistis Make sure you're clicking the System Tray icon to minimize. –  Ellesa Aug 16 '11 at 21:37

Whilst this may theoretically answer the question, it would be preferable to include the essential parts of the answer here, and provide the link for reference. –  Canadian Luke Sep 8 '12 at 19:43

IF USING A CUSTOM SKIN, this checkbox will not be visible until you click the radio button Use native style. You can then check/uncheck the Show systray icon option and then return the radio button to Use custom skin and your settings will be preserved. –  gibberish May 23 '13 at 17:45

MORE INFO - If using a custom skin, the system tray icon will be displayed regardless of settings of Use native style checkboxes. –  gibberish May 23 '13 at 19:33

You can't hide the VLC icon when it is running. It will ALWAYS appear on the taskbar while it is running.
