I install software via MacPorts (new generation of DarwinPort) and some packages using Fink (apt-get). I also use Disk Images and Drag and Drop for some applications. About one month many of my applications have been unable to run, crash after running, or crash after changing the status in the application. There are many errors about Libraries, so I am wondering if I screwed up some settings related to Libraries.

  • I use ZSH as the primary shell for root and my account
  • I've installed Xcode
  • I use Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8
  • I've applied all updates provided by Apple, ports and fink repositories continuously
  • I have installed Qt SDK, all GNU compilation tools (via port) and libraries

From time to time I also have a problem with the modem dialing program provided by Comviq. When I insert the modem, the program crashes and there are lots of errors about Libraries.

My theory is that I have a problem with the Library Path Environment variables or something in that area. However because my experience lies chiefly with Linux and Solaris, I can't figure out how to resolve this on Mac OS X. Any ideas other than reinstalling the OS?

First, let me advise you to pick one packaging system for third-party OSS for Mac OS X and stick with it. My personal preference is MacPorts, which has some participation from Apple folks and which goes out of its way to keep its own bits separate from the system bits for exactly the reasons you are now discovering. :-)

As for how to fix your current issues: My suggestion is to get Snow Leopard and try to do an upgrade install. With a bit of luck, the new OS will replace the parts of the system that have gotten smashed and get you back to a place where your Mac OS X applications are all working again. However, no promises… You have wandered well into the weeds of unsupported territory, so the basic stance you're going to get from Apple is "if you're sophisticated enough to be installing this kind of stuff, you should be sophisticated enough to fix it yourself."

Once you get things working again… which indeed may require a re-install… I'd also suggest getting yourself a backup drive and turning on Time Machine. Then you can experiment with third-party stuff a little more boldly and still get back to a working system easily when it all goes horribly wrong. :-)

Edit: Looking more closely at some of the crash reports, you should also know that some of the third-party stuff you have installed falls under the broad category of "haxies". Yes, there is some very cool stuff out there that can only be done with private SPIs… But sometimes there's a good reason those SPIs are private!

It looks like something really messed up your system! Based on my own experience:

  1. Xcode normally doesn't cause any trouble, as it's pretty tightly integrated into OS X
  2. The problems I have had with MATLAB were all caused - and resolved - by Java and/or X11 settings. It looks like X11 is at play in your error message.
  3. I've had lots of obscure problems with Macports, and so have chosen to boot into Linux instead when I want to use GNU tools that only exist for OSX via Macports.

I have installed Qt SDK, all GNU compilation tools (via port) and libraries

If you have no specific reason not to use the compilers provided by Apple via Xcode, I recommend using these, as per #1.

Oh, and if I were experiencing your problems, I would re-install OS X.

Haha, Eventually re-installation, Actually after RAM upgrae now I use VirtualBox+Debian for GNU tools, but I prefer to solve and understand the problem, instead of re-installing and playing with OS and re-install it after 2 Years (Probably then will not have any Leopard!!) – Ozux Oct 8 '10 at 11:15
