event.h is located in the libevent-dev package.

apt-get install libevent-dev

Incidentally, can you use the tmux Ubuntu package?

Thank you, that worked. The tmux package that comes with Ubuntu is pretty old (1.1 vs. 1.3), and there have been many new features and bug-fixes in the interim. –  oneself Oct 7 '10 at 14:19

Use apt to figure out which *-dev package contains event.h.
