I'm looking for an external USB floppy drive to serve both as a replacement for the broken one in my old laptop and as a floppy drive I can carry with me.

Google and Amazon have helped me narrow down the selection a little, but I'm having trouble finding one that a) is reasonably priced (not over $30; floppies are really old tech) and b) supports both High Density (HD/2HD) and Double Density (DD/2DD) diskettes.

Many of the diskettes I have lying around are of the DD variety, and most drives I've found won't read them. (They only support HD/1.44MB diskettes.) The drives that do support DD diskettes don't seem to read HD diskettes.

I'd rather avoid getting two separate drives to read the different floppy types.

Oh, and a drive that won't fall apart after a few uses would be super awesome. I plan to continue to use it for lighting design work with ETC Express consoles.

Ideal Product:

A relatively inexpensive (under $30) but durable USB floppy drive that will read and write both Double Density and High Density diskettes.

I suppose you want a pony, too? – ta.speot.is Oct 9 '10 at 2:19
I could say yes, just to go along with you, but ponies aren't terribly useful. – dgw Oct 10 '10 at 21:46

Maybe a Sony MPF82E?

http://www.digiconcepts.com/sony_floppydrives_04.htm

Media Support

  • 720KB
  • 1.4MB
  • 1.44MB

Data Transfer Rate

  • 1Mbps Maximum 2HD Floppy Disk
  • 500Kbps Maximum 2DD Floppy Disk

I'm assuming it supports 2HD and 2DD from the data transfer rate. Check out the user manual - http://sony.storagesupport.com/taxonomy/term/26 - for more info.

Looks like that'll do it all. Thanks! – dgw Oct 10 '10 at 21:46
