I run a dedicated FTP server.. I currently use Rumpus, which has a simple web interface, so anyone can upload and download easily, but I am looking for alternative software - a simple PHP/AJAX FTP-interface I can run on my server. It must:

  • have a login system
  • list files
  • allow uploading files
  • allow users to download files

Ideally free.

What is your tool of choice ?

Take a look at the simple interface I am currently using - even the option at the left is too much for some users!

I've reworded the question a bit, as it did sound like an advert for Rampus, hope you don't mind.. Also, this sounds like a question for SuperUser.. – dbr Aug 8 '09 at 10:24
no problem about the advertising, wich i am not doing it... i like to hear about the final solution to this never ending quest of the ftp-web-upload-download-interface-feature – marc-andre menard Aug 8 '09 at 11:47
Rewrite the title.. if this is not about an FTP server! but to do with a web interface for managing a website. – barlop Sep 27 '10 at 12:39

It doesn't sound like you are actually looking for an FTP server, but instead a browser based file manager, as you mentioned PHP, jQuery and AJAX, all of which have very little do with FTP.

Swampy Browser is a free file browser based on PHP and AJAX. (I don't believe they use jQuery, but that doesn't really matter.) I've used it a bit and although not fancy, it's simple and works.

If you are looking for a free FTP server, FileZilla is excellent for Windows.

Edit Rumpus is the only "FTP server" I know that has both a web interface and is also an FTP server. I don't think you'll find anything else that suits your needs, if this is what you are looking for.

+1 for filezilla. Use it and love it – Edoode Aug 8 '09 at 9:32
never ever hear about swampy browser... look good at first, but no login system, that a little bit unsecure !... – marc-andre menard Aug 8 '09 at 9:44
for filezilla, it look like windows 3.1. Let's think about it from a point of view of a assistant or a business manager, KISS. – marc-andre menard Aug 8 '09 at 9:47

cant you just add your favorite authentication layer on top of swampy? eg enable http plain/digest authentication in a local .htaccess configuration. – Jørn Schou-Rode Aug 8 '09 at 10:08
Dont have a clue what you talk about, can you point me in the direction of a tutorial about that ! – marc-andre menard Aug 8 '09 at 10:51

Looking for a file manager on google.com wasn't to terribly dificult. There are plenty of different ones to choose from... Based on what the above comments mention however, I would suggest this basic one

http://www.solitude.dk/filethingie/

Seems to fit the bill you are looking for. You could also try a whole lot of CMS systems (content management systems) that will allow your users to download things from the site, and upload based on access.

Http File Server (HFS) is a very good open source alternative if you just want to put up a simple web site for file sharing (and it's free).
