I recently picked up a copy of Photoshop CS4 Extended and i want to learn to use it. I've found a few tutorials but not really enough to get a good idea of how to make my own works of art.

I know some basic commands and can probably find a tool or setting when instructed. Pictures are of course a must for these type of tutorials. I'm looking for beginner or intermediate tutorials like the ones at Vladstudio. Ones that cover a specific tool are nice as are general ones that cover making a background or similar other item (icons, logos, etc.)

I absolutely require that these tutorials not have any sort of grunge, offensive content or anything along those lines (the aforementioned Vladstudio is a good example).

In short: where can i find nice safe photoshop tutorials that can help me learn how to use my purchase effectively?

(Can make it CW if neccessary)

Not sure this will pass your "grunge, offensive content" filter, but I thought I'd mentioned it anyway ;-)

In order:

a) PSDTuts is just awesome. Very clean, followable tutorials, and some excellent periodic interviews.

b) PhotoshopLady is the collection of best photoshop tutorials from all over the internet.

c) PhotoshopStar is also very followable.

d) And dont forget Smashing Magazine. A neat and awesome collection from various sources including the ones I mentioned above.

These are all free.

If you are willing to pay, I have heard that Lynda is good, but I haven't tried it out myself.

Happy learning!

I've watched PhotoshopUserTV that has useful tutorials geared towards handling and manipulating photo. I first learnt about Adobe Lightroom in this show and lots of tips and tricks that I normally wouldn't even have thought about.

It is available freely as a video podcast on iTunes.

My absolute favorite is from an incredible artist named Bert Monroy at Pixel Perfect. Bert loves his work, knows it incredibly well and shows us tricks that he spent years learning like the simple method of making lightning come off the end of a staff - easy but only if you know how and he shows you how! Best yet, he does it like your buddy rather than an arrogant artist that goes so fast he leaves us in the dust.

Check out his site at least - amazing realistic artwork. One is called Damen and is 40" x 120" and every pixel of it was drawn by him - he refuses to use anything he didn't draw from scratch.

If you are willing to spend a bit of money lynda.com has some of the best video tutorials. Thier photoshop CS4 videos can be found here: http://www.lynda.com/home/ViewCourses.aspx?lpk0=391

I recommend starting with "CS4 essential training".

I really like the different tutorials on Psdtuts. Most tutorials are teaching how to do a specific technique, but that is a fun way to learn about different tools in photoshop.

I think the most efficient way to learn photoshop is to follow the Adobe "Learn Photoshop CS 4" channel from the "Adobe TV" website and to read when necessary the documentation about photoshop CS4 provided by Adobe.

A lot of tutorials are teaching you somehow "a recipe" whereas you're goal is to learn how to "cook".

I suggest you to :

  • Use Adobe multiple ressources to learn how to "use photoshop" and not just how to "do this and do that".
  • Each time you're trying to learn, stay focus on one thing. Try to understand how it works and how it could be used. Try every single possibility you have with the tool until you fell like you know everything about this tool.
  • Use tutorials to realize what's possible to do with photoshop and how other people are using the tools.

Photoshop is a very powerfull software with a lot of features. Keep in mind that the more you know about how tools works and features works, the more you'll be able to express your creativity.
