Possible Duplicate:
What is the best software for desktop recording?

I'm a newbie in desktop recording and screencasting. I didn't find a suitable free application to do all the things I want it to do, but I did enjoy using jing.

I would expect such an application to have these features:

  • choose the whole desktop, a region, a window to record
  • zoom in an area, and camera move
  • save the recorded movie to a compressed format
  • have basic editing tools
  • have the mouse highlighting feature (either a sonar blip or something similar)
  • highlight window/field on the screen, any trick will do
  • display pressed keys/key combinations (like iphone does)

So the question is:

Which free desktop recording/screencasting software would you recommend on windows?

It doesn't have to have all those features, just tell me your favorable experiences. Please suggest tools that would do mouse/keys/areas highlight tricks. I'm open to commercial software too, but I would prefer a free one.

uTIPu seems like a decent candidate : http://www.utipu.com/app/

(Service was shut down around 30 September 2010)

This looks promising! It does most of the things I expect it to do. – Mercer Traieste Jul 15 '09 at 11:50
This is not free for commercial use. – Vaccano Jan 14 '10 at 22:19

I have used Wink in the past to record tutorials for our company website.

+1 for a free tool is great. Has some quirks, but it's useful – Vinko Vrsalovic Jul 15 '09 at 13:58
Why is Wink considered as a screencasting solution? Wink can only save snapshots of your desktop. While "a screencast is essentially a movie of the changes over time that a user sees on a computer screen" (wikipedia). Yes Wink is a great tool and also free, but not more useful than a sledgehammer if you want to create a screencast. – András Szepesházi Sep 9 '11 at 9:19

I've tried some freeware screen recording programs like

They are not bad and you can do some nice screen casts. If you want somthing more professional, my advice is to spend USD 299 and buy Camtasia Studio. IMO it is worth every penny.

I'm afraid that a commercial app is the only answer. – Mercer Traieste Jul 15 '09 at 11:51

You could try the Open Source CamStudio.

I've tried both

I switched to Jing because it also supports MacOSX (I'm no longer a Windows User). The free edition has lot of features.

I'd go with Jing again if I needed to – ChrisF Jul 15 '09 at 10:03
I will give Wink a try. – Mercer Traieste Jul 15 '09 at 11:51
